MILESTONES, Page 44
DIED. Steve Rubell, 45, flamboyant co-founder of Studio 54,
the trend setting Manhattan discotheque; of complications from
hepatitis and septic shock; in New York City. During the late
1970s, when publicity-seeking celebrities like Andy Warhol, Liza
Minnelli and Bianca Jagger flocked to Studio 54, Rubell and his
longtime partner, Ian Schrager, were the kings of Manhattan night
life. The party came to an end in 1979, when the two were convicted
of tax evasion. After serving one-year prison terms, Rubell and
Schrager started successful hotel ventures and a new Manhattan
night spot, the Palladium.
